Literature Text

You grabbed the keys to your mom’s car as you headed out, Loki trailing behind you. You didn’t have your own car so you used your parent’s. They didn’t go into town much and mostly used the golf cart to get to the lab. This left you to use the silver SUV to your heart’s content. You unlocked the car and proceeded to get it. Loki stood beside the car, eying it suspiciously.

“Do you know what this is?” You asked, getting back out. Loki shook his head slightly. You sighed and walked to the passenger side to open the door. “It’s a way of transportation. You just sit in it while I drive us. Come and sit on this side.” He approached you and glanced at the car seat.

“It’s quite small in there.”

You rolled your eyes. “Sorry, it’s not a chariot.”

Loki proceeded to sit in the seat and looked around the interior of the car with displeasure. “It’ll do.”

You closed the door a little harder than necessary and returned back to the driver’s seat. “Put your seatbelt on.”

“What is a belt of seat?”

You pointed to the area near his shoulder. “Pull that out, and then insert it here. It has to click in place.” You watched him struggle with it but when it clicked he smiled at you in victory. You just shook your head, trying to hide the smile that was tugging on your lips. You started the vehicle and backed up. You proceeded to drive on the dirt road that brought you out of the heavily forested area that secluded your home. You put on your sunglasses to relieve your eyes from the sun. It was beautiful today.

It wasn’t until you reached the main road that Loki spoke. “Are you cross with me?” You glanced over in his direction to see him looking out the window, head rested in hand as he took in his surroundings.

Your immediate response was to deny it, but you thought over your attitude to him and realized it was not very kind. “Sort of.” He looked at you, eyebrow cocked in question.

“Sort of?”

“Well, think of it from my point of view. I try to be civil but every time you make a snide comment. You think yourself so much better than us. That might be correct in every single way since you are a God and whatnot, but humans just don’t like to be told that we are below anyone. We like equality and fairness.” You smiled at him. “Thank you, I had to get that off my chest. I know you are from another world than mine, with different lifestyles and such, so I will try to be nicer.”

He seemed to mull over your words with thoughtful eyes. He returned to his original pose of looking outside. You thought the conversation was over but then you heard his soft voice. “Then I suppose…I will attempt to be less condescending.” You grinned happily at his words.

“Thank you.”

Loki’s POV

He watched the trees pass by as they drove on. Pondering to himself. What is with this mortal? Her openness and honesty to him was surprising. He half expected her to deny her irritation with him and just let it fester. He thought over his words to her back in the kitchen and the night before. Yes, he had been insulting, but he just liked to see your flustered reaction and see what kind of retort he would get.

They drove on in silence until Loki heard her move in her seat. Suddenly, music filled the car. He quickly turned around to see where it was coming from.

“What is that?” He ignored the feeling in his chest when he saw your bashful smile. You pointed to the weird black mechanism embedded in the machine you were both sitting in.

“I just turned on the radio. It allows us to listen to music.” Loki looked at it curiously. He touched some of the buttons experimentally, cringing as he found the volume dial.

“Ah!” He yelped as the music pierced his ear drums. He quickly turned it the other way and leaned as far as possible from the contraption. “I wash my hands of this device.” He looked over to see you laughing at his response. What an odd girl.

Loki looked back out the window to see other humans walking around. He saw a building that looked like multiple buildings combined into one. He noticed an area that other transportation machines were sitting in. He watched as you guided the vehicle into one of the spots beside another. This appears similar to the market in Asgard. He never bought anything there but he visited on occasion to see the peasants with his fath-correction-with Odin and Thor.

“We’re here!” You exclaimed happily. She seems to be in a much better mood.

Normal POV

You parked the car and got out, waiting for Loki. You opened the door for him since he seemed loss on how to do so. He got out and stretched. You just noticed how tall he was compared to you as he extended his arms and neck. He let out a relieved sigh and looked at you. You turned and started walking, he followed.

“This is an outlet mall. My town isn’t very big so we don’t have one of those giant malls but this is close enough.” You waved your arm towards to stores you walked by. “Here, we have stores that sell all sorts of things. Food, electronics, clothes, anything you really need.” I feel like a tour guide. "On your left you’ll notice the street light. It is similar to street lights everywhere and has no special quality to it.” You suppressed a laugh at your thought. “After we shop we can get some lunch. There’s a really good place here that sells these amazing burgers.” When you got no response you looked behind you, only to be met with empty space. Some people walked by you, giving you weird looks for talking to yourself. “Loki?” You looked around to see no sign of the God. Great. Where did he run off to? You back-tracked in the direction you came from.

You looked into each store as you passed by. You almost walked by the book store he was standing in. You entered, alerting him and the store clerk of your presence as the door chimed. Loki glanced at you before returning back to his task. He was standing in the History section, a pile of books in his arms. You were relieved to find him.

“Loki, you can’t just wander off like that. You-“

“Here.” Loki dropped the pile of books into your arms and continued searching through the sections. You glanced at some of the titles. World History, Earth’s Greatest Wars, World’s Atlas, Hamlet-Wait, what? Shakespeare?

“You like Shakespeare?” You noticed that Titus Andronicus and Coriolanus were in the pile as well.

Loki placed another book on the ever growing tower of text. It was almost higher than your head.

“It seems like the most appealing stories this shop has to offer.”

“Okay, this is enough books. They’re expensive, you know.” Loki placed one more on the pile. He smirked in amusement as he no longer could see your face behind the books. Your arms were getting tired under the weight of the heavy literature. Loki lifted them from your arms and carried them over to the store clerk. The clerk raised his eyebrows at the odd selection of books but didn’t say anything. You used your dad’s credit card to pay for it. “At least my dad will take comfort in knowing you’re using his money for education purposes.”

After paying, you grabbed the bag. Loki took it from your hands and smiled slightly. “Allow me.”

“Thanks. Okay, we’re going to the clothes store now and you’re not disappearing again.” You grabbed his sleeve and lead him out of the store. He didn’t argue. Once you excited the book store you let go. Loki glanced down at his hand with a thoughtful look on his face. You lead on towards the clothes store. There were a few but you picked this one due to the majority of male clothing available. You led Loki through the store, pointing out what was normal attire and which was more formal. He glanced over to the small women’s section of the store. He pointed in the direction of one of the racks with many loose fitting dresses.

“What of those robes there?”

You looked to where he was pointing and laughed lightly. “Loki, those are dresses. For women.”

His brow lowered in confusion. “But robes are for both genders. I do not understand why women get the privilege.” You threw your hands up in defeat.

“You want to buy one? Buy one!” You watched Loki walk over to the dress rack, pull out a dress, examine it, then put it back. You gaped at him. “Change your mind?”

“They did not suit me,” he huffed. You covered your mouth, trying not to laugh.

“[Name]!” You and Loki both got startled when arms wrapped around you from behind. You quickly realized it was Stan but Loki just stared at the new person with contempt.

“Stan, what are you doing here?” You asked, returning the embrace and smiled at him.

“Uh, shopping. Derp.” He lightly bonked your head with a closed fist, laughing. Loki cleared his throat loudly, making his presence known. Stan eyed him up and down. He smiled and extended a hand to Loki with one arm still wrapped around you. “Hi there, I’m Stan. [Name]’s BFF.” Loki just narrowed his eyes at the arm placed around you, ignoring the outreached hand. Stan frowned and pulled back. He made a show of whispering in your ear, making sure Loki heard. “Hey, where did you find Mr. Sourpuss?”

Stan got the reaction he wanted as you burst out laughing. Loki? Sourpuss? Oh my, God. Loki frowned as he watched you double over in laughter. He did not know what the word meant but he knew when he was being mocked. You wiped a tear away and stood next to Loki. You smiled at him, patting him on the shoulder.

“Stan is just teasing. He means well.” Loki met your eyes and relaxed a little. He took a step towards Stan, hands folded behind his back.

“I am Loki. [Name]’s family is housing me while I take my studies here.” You felt a shiver as Loki said your name. It sounded so different coming from him. Stan’s mouth dropped open. He looked at you with an overly-shocked face.

“[Name]! How come you didn’t tell me? We should have had a welcoming party! Oh wait. We had your Birthday party yesterday so that wouldn’t have worked.” He put his hand to his chin and paced quickly in thought. “Hmm…we can always have a party today, no, Josie is working today. Tomorrow? No no no. Aha!” He turned towards you both, face lit up with an idea. “I got it! I will buy you lunch. That’ll have to do for now.”

“Stan, you don’t need to,” you started to protest but he was having none of it.

“Nope, my mind is made up.” You grinned at him. This is why you were the best of friends. You loved his expressive behaviour.

“Thank you,” you said. You lightly elbowed Loki. He looked down at you with an annoyed look. You tipped your head towards Stan, your brow raised. “He just offered free food. Shouldn’t you say something?”

Loki pondered for a moment before nodding. “Yes,” he agreed. He looked at Stan with a small smirk just barely gracing his lips. “I wish to have pancakes.”

You face-palmed.
